Bud Gallmeier wrote in the Fort Wayne market for 43 years, and retired May 30, 1990, after 38 years with The News-Sentinel. Gallmeier's name has been retired by the Fort Wayne Komets whom he covered for 35 years. He also covered the International Hockey League for the Hockey News for many years.

Gallmeier also covered the Indianapolis 500 for 31 years and was a fixture at Purdue football and basketball games. He was inducted into the Avilla and Baer Field racing hall of fames, and even had a local softball league named after him.  The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association also gave him the Virgil Sweet Distinguished Service Award.

He retired May 30, 1990 and died Sept. 11, 1992 at age 67.
